Armoured Target Boats
Until the summer of 1931 bombing training at sea had been inefficient and inaccurate for the RAF, relying upon stationary targets, or upon those towed by larger vessels. In March 1932 the Air Ministry asked Beauforte-Greenwood if a boat could be designed with sufficient armour to withstand 8½lb practice bombs. The Director of Training, AirâCommodore Mitchell, that month commissioned E.6 to produce a towed or W/T1 controlled target-boat.2 B-G recalled in 1935:
